Flo Kemp - 2026 Honored Member

Flo Kemp is a Long Island-based artist known for her extensive work in etching and oil painting.  Her artwork is described as serene and calm.

Her painterly soft ground etchings inspired by coastal and rural landscapes are all done by the hand of the artist.

Etching is a form of intaglio printmaking, a process where a drawing is first done on a zinc plate and then immersed in an acid bath until the acid bites or etches the lines of the drawing.  The variations in tone are achieved by lengthening the periods of immersion in the acid bath.  Once a plate is etched with a design, oil inks are applied to the etched lines on the plate, and then hand-pulled through a printing press with paper.  The plate is re-inked and wiped for each successive proof.  Although etching is a multiple edition and the colors are similar, each proof is original.

Flo Kemp regularly exhibits her work and has been the recipient of several awards at art festivals and juried art exhibits, such as “Best in Show” at the Ann Arbor State Art Festival (2000), and South Portland’s Art in the Park (2025); Outstanding Works on Paper award at Gallery North Outdoor Art Festival (2024), and an Honorary award Guild Hall’s Members Exhibit (2023); among others.   Her work also been shown in the U.S. State Department’s Arts in Embassies Program in Taipei, Taiwan (2003-2006) and was featured on the cover of the Journal of Forestry magazine.

Flo Kemp has been recognized for her significant contributions to the Long Island arts community and was named the “Woman of the Year in Arts” by the Three Village Beacon newspaper in 2012.  She is the founder of the Setauket Artists group, and founder/organizer of a local figure drawing group at Gallery North, in Setauket, NY.  

Flo Kemp is a dedicated long-time member and board member of the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club. She participates in the club’s juried exhibitions and has received the Creative Hands award; the Evelyn G. Greenspan award in graphics.  Most recently, Flo Kemp organized the successful CLWAC Member’s exhibition at The Reboli Center for Art and History in Stony Brook, NY.
